First settle which Chatham County the case belongs to

Chatham County, Georgia

Use the Superior Court Clerk Criminal Division for Superior Court criminal filings, record requests and indicted-case copies. The clerk links criminal record information to re:SearchGA.

Chatham County, North Carolina

Use the North Carolina Judicial Branch Chatham County page to reach the local clerk and court services. North Carolina has its own search and copy rules; Georgia fees, certification methods and retrieval timing do not carry over.

Fast jurisdiction check

Look at the court name, state abbreviation, case caption, charging agency or mailing address on any notice you already have. Do this before entering a name into a portal, because identical county names can produce a plausible but wrong result.

For a Georgia case, move from the locator to the document you actually need

  1. 01
    Locate the Georgia case

Follow the clerk’s re:SearchGA route to identify the criminal case and retain the case number, defendant name and document or disposition you need.

  2. 02
    Choose a copy channel

The Criminal Division accepts indicted-case copy requests by U.S. mail, UPS/FedEx, in person or fax. Use the clerk’s Request for Documents form and wait for the quoted cost rather than guessing the fee.

  3. 03
    Choose certification deliberately

The clerk labels its online option as Electronic Certified Records Only through eCertification. If a plain copy is enough, use an ordinary copy route instead of ordering certification by default.

  4. 04
    Plan for stored files

If the requested file is off-site, the clerk asks readers to allow 48 hours for delivery to the office. Build that into a deadline-sensitive request.

North Carolina separates case lookup, the filed record and a background check

Need Use Why this route
Find a criminal case Public clerk self-service terminal or Portal for available case information. A locator can identify the case, defendant and case number, but it is not automatically a certified background-check result.
Read or copy the filed case record Visit the clerk in the North Carolina county where the case is located; start from the Chatham County court page. The Judicial Branch says paper criminal case files are accessed in the county holding the case and copies may be made for a fee.
Perform a criminal background check Follow the North Carolina criminal background-check guidance and the county clerk route. The state specifically tells individuals doing background checks to use the county clerk rather than treating Portal as the background-check product.

Do not transfer a result across the Georgia–North Carolina boundary

Same county name, different record systems

A Georgia Chatham case number, re:SearchGA result or eCertification copy says nothing about North Carolina coverage. A North Carolina Portal or clerk result says nothing about Georgia coverage. When the state is unknown, resolving jurisdiction is part of the record search—not an optional detail.
